Have started to uncover my problem with TV storytelling.

It’s like reading a novel, but you can only read a chapter a week for three months, and then you have to stop reading for a year, when you can read a few more chapters for a few months, and then you have to stop again, and you repeat this process for nigh on a damn decade.

This is what TV is like for me. It’s why I’m incapable of fully appreciating it unless the show is self-contained, doesn’t bullshit its audience to buy time like Lost, and I can watch it at my own pace, marathon-style.

I thought the last season of Mad Men was pretty mediocre until I re-watched most of it on Netflix before the current season. All the pieces fit together because I didn’t have artificially-imposed gaps in the storytelling.

Thought experiment: You’re a kid, and you love Harry Potter, and they give you Goblet of Fire for the first time, but you’re only allowed to read thirty pages a month between March and May, and then you can’t touch the book again until next March. Don’t you hate them for it?

Just in case you think it’s all been roses I’d like to report that Yaddo rejected me (as recently as 2011). McDowell rejected me. Hedgebrook rejected me twice. The Georgia Review rejected me and Ploughshares rejected me and Tin House rejected me, as did about twenty other journals and magazines. Both The Sun and The Missouri Review rejected me before I appeared in their pages. Literary Arts declined to give me a fellowship three times before I won one. I’ve applied for an NEA five times and it’s always been a no. Harper’s magazine never even bothered to reply. I say it all the time but I’ll say it again: keep on writing. Never give up. Rejection is part of a writer’s life. Then, now, always.”
